We know that. We say that. But if we’re honest, prayer can also become familiar.

Sometimes it flows easily. At other times it takes discipline simply to stop, quiet our hearts and pray.

James points us towards Elijah as an example of prevailing prayer — prayer that persists, believes and makes a difference. Elijah prayed earnestly, the rain stopped, and when he prayed again, the heavens opened.

Yet tucked into this remarkable story is an important reminder: Elijah was human, just like us.

He wasn’t a spiritual superhero. He experienced fear, exhaustion and discouragement. Yet God worked powerfully through his prayers.

That should encourage us.

We don’t come to prayer because we have everything together. We don’t pray to earn God’s acceptance or convince Him to love us. We pray from a place of already being loved and accepted by our Heavenly Father.

Our confidence isn’t ultimately in the person praying, but in the God to whom we pray.

A Prayer That Comes From the Heart

James describes effective prayer as fervent. There is something heartfelt about it.

Prayer is more than saying the right words or working through a spiritual checklist. It involves our hearts — our hopes, burdens, frustrations, faith and longing.

That means keeping our hearts soft matters.

Life has a way of hardening them. Disappointment, busyness, tiredness and frustration creep in. One of the simplest ways to return is through worship: stopping, resting in God’s presence and allowing Him to soften us again.

Jesus warned against prayer becoming empty repetition or religious performance. Prayer was always intended to be relationship – an honest conversation with our Father.

Andrew Murray described it beautifully:

“Prayer is not a monologue, but a dialogue. God’s voice is its most essential part.”

Prayer isn’t only about what we have to say to God. It is also about learning to listen.

Perhaps before asking, “What should I pray?” we sometimes need to ask:

“Holy Spirit, how should I pray?”

A Quiver of Prayer

Surfers understand the value of a quiver. Different conditions call for different boards.

Prayer can be similar.

There are moments to ask. Moments to persist. Moments to declare God’s promises. Moments to intercede for others. Moments to confront spiritual opposition. And moments when the most powerful thing we can do is simply become quiet and listen.

The Holy Spirit leads us in how to pray.

Rather than approaching every situation in exactly the same way, we can learn to recognise His prompting and direction.

Desire. Discipline. Delight.

Perhaps a simple way of thinking about our prayer lives is through three words:

Desire. Discipline. Delight.

Prayer often begins with desire – something stirring within us. A person, a nation, a situation or a longing that God places on our heart.

But desire needs to become discipline.

Prayer can easily get pushed aside by everything else demanding our attention. Sometimes we simply need to make space, show up and pray – even when we don’t particularly feel like it.

And somewhere in that faithful rhythm, discipline can become delight.

We begin to enjoy God’s presence. Prayer becomes less about completing something and more about being with Someone.

But the journey isn’t always linear.

Sometimes delight becomes discipline again. There will be days when the emotion isn’t there and prayer feels like hard work. On those days, faithfulness might simply sound like:

I’m still here, Lord. I’m still praying. I’m still believing.

Perhaps that is part of prevailing prayer – continuing to seek God when the answer hasn’t arrived yet.

So whatever season you are in, keep praying.

Bring the desire. Build the discipline. Rediscover the delight.

Keep your heart soft. Keep listening. Keep asking.

Because the power of prayer has never depended on perfect people.

It depends on a faithful God.

Phil Taylor, Australia

Desire, Discipline & Delight “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much.” — James 5:16 Prayer is powerful.
